Author: Sunday Coming Black Baseball in Virginia, Mcfarland 2002. Dedicated to the research and preservation of Virginia's history of Black Baseball's players and teams. I grew up one property over from Armstead Hill home to the Ivy Virginia Eagles. Ivy diamond was an easy walk for most fans and ballplayers in the community. More than once I discovered foul balls in our front yard.
My Support Team
My writing and research efforts would be all the more challenging without the assistance of the remaining former ballplayers. They have been giving of their time from day one and inspirational in making this body of work a reality.
Sunday Coming is the story of black baseball in Virginia, written with the aid of a few remaining facts, and recreated through the words of the men who played, and whose spirited memories speak volumes for their love of baseball in a bygone era. It is titled "Black Baseball" to differenti ate play in the sandlots from that in the professional Negro leagues that existed between 1920 and 1950.
From Winchester to Tidewater, Danville to Fairfax, black baseball was the longest-running form of entertainment and recreation in the black communities of the Old Dominion. For those able to recall the enduring tradition, it is the most talked about and treasured topics. For five decades Virginia's black teams played their form of Negro League baseball in rural pastures, cleared-out forested properties, city parks, and, for a fortunate few, in minor league stadiums.
The characters and humble facilities mirrored the essence of what evolved into the professional Negro Leagues. It was the same fast-paced play and showmanship, complemented by descriptive nicknames such as "Preacher" and "Rooster."
Black baseball in Virginia was family and community baseball through Jim Crow segregation, the Civil Rights movement, and the early stages of integration. Nearly every community statewide had at least one black baseball team between 1930 and 1970. The ball team carried the ban ner of the community, so that communities became synonymous with the baseball team and the families who filled out the team.

The July 4th weekend was a time for family and fireworks but it was not complete without a baseball game. Black ball clubs in Virginia usually scheduled two ballgames for the holiday weekend, one home and one away. The Little Washington Monarchs were known to invite half a dozen or more teams playing out day long double elimination tournaments.
